Animal experiments over the times: a highly controversial subject

A brief history of animal experiments from Antiquity to date, which puts this recurrent and controversial debate into perspective and allows a better understanding of the related biological and sanitary challenges. This review recalls the many advances made in the field of human and animal health thanks to these experiments. It also recalls the technical and ethical aspects of the necessary protection of animals as well as the duties of humans towards animals.
